Bring your kids!

We have so many kids who come into Free Parking—with family and friends, for birthdays and graduation parties, and just for a random Thursday. We, of course, have our family game section, much beloved by all ages. But did you know that we have game passports for the littles? It’s true! They get their very own passport with a list of family-weight games and some rules (of course)—each time they come in, they can get stickers in their passport for up to two games played here in the bar. When they get 6 stickers, they get a little toy, and when they get 12 stickers, they get a sweet treat! (I’m printing more on Monday, so if you come in on the 3rd, we won’t have them replenished yet…)

This coming Saturday (the 9th), we’ll have a family crafting party from noon-2pm—bring your kids for lunch (or brunch!) and make a very cute robot puppet with friends of the bar Dana and Annie! All supplies are included, so just come up for some food and drink and make something to take home!

We had one of our regular families in the other day with their little (4 I think?), and she absolutely got a sticker for playing with the Wyrmspan pieces. No, she didn’t play the game, but we’re raising a generation of kids to love games, so I say it counts! Games teach kids how to follow procedures to get the outcome they want, they teach taking turns and having patience, they teach how to win and lose gracefully, and they teach simply spending time with others, not on our phones.

So bring your friends, bring your enemies, and bring your kids!

Play trivia games!

You know you want to defeat your friends and loved ones at a game of knowledge, don’t lie…

  • In a Nut Shell has players trying to guess a word with very little information initially, but with each passing turn, learning a little more.

  • Mind the Gap includes four decks of trivia cards, each with questions geared towards different generations.

  • Wit’s End is the most like Trivial Pursuit, with players needing to answer questions in different categories in order to move closer to the center and victory.

  • In Fact or Crap, players don’t actually need to know the answer, so much as they need to judge whether a statement is true or false, and do so the fastest.

  • Smart Ass, similar to In a Nut Shell, gives players increasingly specific clues to help them guess the answer, but fewer points the more clues you get.

  • Timeline is an excellent history-based game where players attempt to put their cards into an increasingly-long timeline, correct placements shrinking your hand, incorrect requiring you to draw another card, with the goal being to play to an empty hand.

Try our French Toast!

Have you been to Free Parking for brunch yet? It’s a delight! And french toast might be my favorite thing on the menu: Texas toast soaked in egg custard, fried up to a golden brown, and smothered with mascarpone cheese, fruits, and powdered sugar. Served with maple syrup, of course. Perfect fuel to get you read for a game of Wit’s End.

Mark your calendars!

Have you seen our green flags? They’re literal green flags that you can put on your table. The idea is, if you’re open to having someone you don’t know sit with you—so you can make new game friends, so you can play bigger games, etc.—ask for one of our green flags. And if you ever see one on a table, know that you are welcome to sit there yourself. The green flags are a cheery way to say, “Come on over, friend!”
