Saturday’s fundraiser for our new neighbors Transform Cincy.

What a week with storms and smoke and illness, huh? I was here at the bar the other day and the groupchat for my street in Pleasant Ridge was blowing up. Our basement was mercifully dry, but a few neighbors at the bottom of our street had flooded basements a foot deep! A few years ago, a storm took out a huge old oak tree which in turn took out an electric pole and the entire street’s power for days. The bottom half of the road was entirely blocked for most of that time, so those of us at the top of the street offered our cars for folk to get to work, we groceried for folk, we stored their fridge and freezer goods til the power came back on. One neighbor who runs a landscaping business began chopping up the tree almost immediately in an attempt to clear space. It was a wild and connecting time!

We’re good at showing up for each other in times of crisis, we humans. A casserole when someone has died, labor or clothing or hot meals in a natural disaster, money shared when we can’t get to the place itself. It’s part of being neighbors, whether that’s on your block or the whole planet.
